DESIGN APPROACH

While the demand for affordable housing in Maine is estimated to be more than 20,000 units, currently the state can only afford to build 300-400 new affordable units per year.  With the significant gap between budget and need, one of the greatest challenges is how to do more with the state’s finite resources.

The goal of the project was to propose a community of individual 600-square-foot affordable homes.
Addressing requirements from the Maine State Housing Authority and the Augusta Housing Authority, the proposed design solution is a Passive House design using a modular construction method, which provides a highly efficient home throughout its lifecycle from the design, to the build, to the on-going energy usage.
